Why am I doing the Summer #BlogChallenge?

--Why are you doing this challenge?

Well, I used to write a LOT. I wrote poetry, short fiction, stories for my high school yearbook, pretty much anything. Now I find that I don't have time to write for myself and a lot of the time my blog even suffers from lack of content and writing. I sometimes get a great idea for a post only to forget it later. If I'm lucky I may get a few sentences down but then the post gets lost among the ones that get published and they never get finished. I feel like I need to challenge myself so I decided to do a blog post every day this summer (June 1st-August 31st). I unexpectedly had a lot of response that others wanted to participate. I organized the challenge and I now have a group of amazing bloggers relying on me to make this a success. It's a bit daunting to think of it that way but that will keep me motivated to stay on top of things. It will teach me to schedule posts (which I don't currently do) so that I can multi-task better and be a little more efficient at this blogging thing. Another part of it is just the basic idea that adding something into your routine for x amount of days (I believe I read somewhere it takes 17 days to create a habit) to become your habits and I think that 90 days is a surefire way to get it programmed into my day. =)

You can read all my #BlogChallenge posts HERE for your convenience.

CC Bums Review

Everybody has already heard about the great cloth diapers you can get at CC Bums, but I'm here to talk about a completely different product, MAMA CLOTH! Yeah, not only does owner, Cami make diapers, wipes, wet bags, longies and every other thing you could need, but she's also making reusable cloth pads.

She was also kind enough to give me 50% off so I can tell you about them.

As I've mentioned, I have only just recently began using mama cloth. CC Bums are the second ones I've tried so I just got the basic starter set. I really like them. They are trim, topped with minky and have a nice shape to them.

Upon first glance I thought for sure that most of them would be too thin and would leak. I mean, just thinking about the pads available at the store, they are usually thicker than these are.  I am happy to say that I used them for a cycle and I was pleasantly surprised that I never had a leak with any of them! The secret's in the waterproof fleece used as the backing. SMART!

There's also a snap on the wings which secures it in place and assures that it's not going to be moving around. You can also fold the pad up if you're out on the go and toss it in a small wet bag.

Also, check out the little asterisk detail on the back side of the wing. that's a convenient little reminder of how many absorbent layers are inside. In my opinion, GENIUS! Most items like these and cloth diapers use absorbent materials that are super trim and this is a nice little guide to help you choose the right one for that particular day.

On the more absorbent and thicker pads, there's even a line of stitching down the middle. This just helps to ensure that everything gets absorbed.

Check out CC Bums on Facebook and snag some of the amazing in stock products from the Store. =)

**Disclosure: These are 100% my words and opinions. I was not paid to complete this review; I did however receive a complimentary product for review purposes.**

Adding to the Stash

My very first few diapers, were ones that I made with the help of my amazing Mother in law. They worked great, but the instructions I was using weren't super clear to someone who wasn't familiar with diapers. Even my mother in law had issues with the instructions and she's been sewing for years! Then, when those diapers became a bit snug, I bought a used stash of 24 Bum Genius 3.0s. Now, I'm starting to migrate away from pockets and I've been looking at my alternative options. I have a few all in one's that have started to not be as waterproof and I felt like they were just being wasted by sitting on the shelf.

various fleece diaper coversIn the Mother's Day Cloth Diaper hop, I was sponsored for a fleece cover. I had never used fleece before but quickly found that it was just the extra layer I needed to squeeze the last bit of life from my diapers. Over the past couple of days, I made four new fleece covers as well as two diapers which will be AI2s. Just waiting on some new fabrics before making the inserts.

Also, side note, I used the Katrina Pattern for the fleece covers but never actually got a chance to read through the tutorial. My hubby left our laptop cord at the office and was busy no our desktop so I just winged it. Haha.

side snapping cloth diaperFor the diapers, I used the Cloth Revolution Pattern. I have to say that I did find the instructions to be somewhat confusing. =S  It also recommended adding a front elastic for snaps to ensure a better fit. I did add the elastic on the white diaper, but I don't really like the way it ended up looking. I may or may not eventually take the elastic out.

I also ended up making a larger wet bag for when I know we'll be out all day versus just a few hours.

Wordless Wednesday

We went out shooting in the mountains one day and Daddy forgot her jacket. This is actually one of mine with the sleeves rolled up. Kinda crazy to think it even fit this well on my 17 month old. She sure loves our little adventures. =)

Summer Blogging Challenge

Recently, I've tried to regulate my blogging by creating specific post ideas for each day. I started Wordless Wednesdays & Free Write Friday but I found that one of those days would came and go before I even realized I had missed it. I know it may sound funny but as a stay at home mom and freelance photographer, I'm used to having an open, flexible schedule. My hubby (J Grizl) is also blessed to have a pretty flexible schedule because he and his 2 partners run a few online businesses and really have a great thing going between them. Sometimes I honestly don't realize what day of the week it is since we don't fit in to the M-F lifestyle.

I've seen the 30 days of blogging challenges out there and I think those are a great idea. I however, take much longer to develop habits sometimes, especially when I'm working hard to do well so I want to push myself to write a blog post every day. I'm aiming for these posts to be aside from my regular posting but as long as I get a post a day, I'll still be happy. =) I plan to begin June 1st and will go until August 31st, maybe longer if anyone else hops on board. We will start with random prompts I've collected over the past week or so via the 30 days type of lists and independent blogs. Some prompts will be general questions and such and some may be more personal or require more detail. I'm going to answer them freely and hope that I won't be judged for anything I may state as my opinion.

I must also confess that I just really don't want this blog to be impersonal. I know it may be the style of other bloggers to keep their children's names secret, not show photos and stick to talking about what they do (sewing, cloth diapering, cooking, recycling, gardening, etc) rather than who they are. When I started my first blog, it began as a journal and turned into a way for family and friends to keep updated with my life. Lately, that blog has been more of a ghost town in the post department and I don't think I can manage two blogs. This one has taken off well and I know there are a few new friends keeping up with me that I've met through our recent cloth diapering events so I want to really give it a go.

Anyone interested in following along with the challenge?? I'll be sending the prompts out weekly and you'll always have next week's in case you like to schedule your posts ahead of time. =) Join our group on Facebook to get all the details and stay informed!! https://www.facebook.com/groups/444722625556244/

Moved!

Life feels a little crazy when I don't have the outlets I normally have, such as keeping up with this blog. We were so busy this past weekend moving and then had to wait a couple days to get the internet transferred. It happened so fast, I mean, we weren't even planning to move until the end of the month. We packed and moved everything in one day and cleaned the old place the next.

I'm so relieved that we are away from our neighbors now. We had so many problems with them that it's hard for me to choose which disturbed me the most. They were stealing our power for a while by plugging their extension cords into our outdoor outlets. We had to call the police a few times because we could hear at least one of them beating up his girlfriend (who never left so you can't feel too sorry for her anymore). They were also really loud, one hit our car the first week we lived there and never did anything about it, they are extreme alcoholics and in the first conversation one of them ever had with my hubby, he let him in on the fact that they were doing cocaine. SERIOUSLY?? Even after all that and contacting the rental company we were leasing from, we were told they were being evicted at the end of March and we couldn't break our contact yet they were still happily living there when we were moving out. Really not okay when I have a little girl. Plus there was no yard or anywhere for her to play.

We found a house we were going to buy but ended up deciding to continue renting because we are really set on not buying in town. We ended up finding an amazing house that is so perfect for us. It's HUGE first of all. On the main floor there is a very large living room and fireplace, large open kitchen and dining room, a mud room and laundry area, a master with bathroom suite, secondary extra large room that is way big enough for our whole office set up and ALL my crafting stuff and doesn't even begin to look full. There's also a smaller bedroom for Natalia, 2 coat closets, and another full bath. All the bedrooms have awesome built in drawers in the bottom of the closets and are really spacious.

There's also a basement with 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a large living room with fireplace, 2 bonus rooms and a super nice large room with built in shelving for food storage. We are lucky enough to only have one neighbor behind us and none on the sides. =) Along the length of the house in the back in an enclosed greenhouse area and outside we've got a HUGE garden area and nice paved space off the driveway for our motor home.

All in all, I'm pretty excited, can you tell? I'm so happy that neither of us are pack rats. We not only have a huge home now but it's not cluttered with a bunch of junk. Be on the lookout in a week or so for some photos. =)

Conquering the Moving Monster

At this point in my life I think it's safe for me to consider myself a packing professional. My hubby and I kind of have this understanding that he is responsible for getting boxes, I will pack everything and toss as I go, he loads into the truck/unloads into the house and I get the pleasure of unpacking everything. You know, for the first few moves that we did I thought it was pretty unfair for the moving jobs to be so heavy on me. Those were the days where we were both working, me in school full time and although there wasn't a little one running around, we still ended up just tossing things into random boxes as our friends are helping to load up the boxes already packed. Talk about losing your freaking mind. Just when you get to take a break yourself, everyone is finished loading and now you've got an entire house to clean, probably by yourself, with a friend's help if you're lucky. Then when you finally get into your new house and start unpacking a few boxes you realize nothing is organized and you can almost guarantee there's a particular item you're also needing right now. OH MY GOODNESS, SHOOT ME NOW!

Don't worry, moving is as easy as you make it to be. We're going to be moving at the end of this month, or sooner, and you can bet I want this to be as easy as possible with a toddler's short patience. I've actually figured out that the system my hubby and I have set up works beautifully. Why? Well, I'm a stay at home mom which means you can count on me being home probably 93% of the time. even though my hubby is blessed enough to be home about 75% of the time, I'm the one that takes care of things overall. So, why shouldn't I have things where I want them? I've mentioned before that I do a much better job sticking with something if I make it convenient for me. So, if you know your kitchen like the back of your hand, you're probably going to enjoy cooking in it more. Especially if you're able to decorate as you'd  like, organize, etc. So, here's how we make it work...

Keep It Organized
My secret weapon is a master box list. I know this may sound crazy to some of you but hear me out. When I pack a box, the only thing I write on the outside is the room I want it to end up in and a number. I used to write a quick list of the general items in each box, until I realized that boxes were all just getting piled up wherever my hubby or our friends found it was easiest to put them. I'm assuming you've had a chance to see your new place prior to moving in so it makes it much easier if the only thing people have to read on the box is the room to put it in. No questions to answer. I keep a notebook that has the box numbers listed on the page with a short reference as to what is in that box. Now it's packed and organized to keep my OCD happy yet easy for the great friends that are so amazing to help us out.

Don't Take Everything
Moving is a great excuse to declutter your house and your life. As I was packing up all my little girl's old clothing, I went through and decided what to keep for a future child and what to let go of. Okay, so this was probably the 3rd time I've gone through her smaller clothes and I was amazed how I still managed to  let go  of 3 more boxes of her old clothes and I haven't even gone through her current size range hanging in her closet. I always like to pretend I'll be living in a tiny house with no storage because it makes me really think about what is worth keeping and will actually get used and what has just been taking up space. (It also helps immensely if you have some impulse control and don't buy everything under the sun because it's a "good deal", besides, it's a better deal if you never spend money on it at all. ;) )

Give Yourself Time
It's insane for you to think that you're going to have a pleasant move if you wait until the last week to do your packing. When it comes time for us to move, I like to do so with the least amount of stuff as possible so I give myself plenty of time to go through a few specific areas. I go though Natalia's clothing and toys, my own clothing, and the kitchen. We aren't fans of knick knacks or items that are purely decorative so these are really the only areas of concern when it comes to decluttering. Even if you choose not to go through your stuff as you're packing, it's a lot less stressful if you can do it in small chunks rather than a week long packing binge. For instance, I packed up stuff we were no longer using as well as almost my entire craft room. It only took me yesterday and today, but I actually only worked on it during the past two days nap times. I don't get stressed out with the overwhelming idea of packing up an entire house and I still get to do other things with my day.

Use The Bare Essentials
I plan to only keep enough clothing unpacked to fit in a duffle bag or suitcase. There's just really no reason to have all of my things out as a just in case scenario that most likely won't happen anyway. I can safely bet that two or three pairs of jeans, 5 shirts, a jacket, some sneakers and a pair of flats will be enough to keep me going. I can also pack any bathroom beauty items up with the exception of a brush, a few hair ties, toothe brush, toothpaste, deodorant and tinted moisturizer. (Give or take a few other small items of course) but for someone who doesn't use all that other "stuff" we've got very often, it won't hurt my feelings for my hair spray to be packed away.

Also, just a really helpful hint:: always pack the toilet paper last, because it's usually one of the first things you'll need in your new place. =)

Free Write Fridays

Along with my attempt to regulate my blog a bit with Wordless Wednesday ( which I realize last week was mostly words but it was still a thoughtful post), I'm adding Free-Write Friday as a little trial run. I did quite a bit of writing in high school between my creative writing class, yearbook, and obviously papers and projects for other classes. Thing is, I actually used to be pretty good at. Now, I've fallen rusty and I feel like it's starting to show on here.
Probably doesn't help that I spend most days with just my ladybug and she's not far enough along in talking yet to have too complex of conversations. =) Anyhow, I'll have a prompt of some sort every week and share what I wrote in response. The point is to just take a few minutes to relax and write whatever comes to mind from the prompt. I'd really love it if you posted your response on your own page and link it up in the comments.

What's a talent you wish you had?

I really wish I was better at cooking. Cooking is one of those things that once you start the task you generally need to finish it all at one time. Maybe I'm still getting used to this toddler tornado that runs around my house but I don't often find a lot of time to do as much cooking and baking in the kitchen as I would like. Where we live right now there just isn't room to have my little girl under my feet while worrying about the three different burners I have going.  I'm actually much better at baking. Toss all the yummy from scratch ingredients into the mixer then into the over. That's mostly wait time.

My sister in law shot me an email a while about these online cooking classes she's been taking through Roxube. They have classes on there that are so detailed such as a whole class about cooking eggs. A class strictly about the knives in your kitchen and using them correctly. This seriously blew my mind and I was thinking how is it that I haven't truly picked up some of the very basic cooking skills and secrets. Maybe in our next house I'll have a kitchen that is much more toddler friendly and I'll live out my dream of homemade muffins ready for breakfast and every meal being a home run.

I've come a long way in cooking but I really think a lot of it has to do with us eating a lot better. It's hard to go wrong when you're already providing your family with fresh wholesome foods to begin with. =)

Prioritizing Your Spending

Money is something that it seems all of us are thinking about more and more. How to save money, what is actually worth spending our money on, and how can I get more of it?

I'm so glad that I gained an understanding of the real value of money earlier than some people do. When I was 17 I moved out of my parents house to live with Jake and be engaged. To clarify, I graduated high school a semester early and was going straight into college 2 weeks later and moved in with him at that time (right before my 18th birthday). My parents didn't agree that I was ready to be living with a boy and be so serious at that young of an age and wanted me to finish school and such before doing something as serious as getting married. They wanted me to either live in the dorm full time or be at home with them when I wasn't. I was also told that if I chose to live with him I would not be receiving help paying for my college or the things I needed for it such as a laptop or car. At the time, I thought it was harsh and I have to admit that I did resent my parents for it a bit.

You know what though? I'm glad every day now that my parents made that choice because Jake and I having to pay for my college, along with the extras (required dorm, laptop, etc) and a car to get there (since it was 1 1/2 from where we lived) made us learn really quick to prioritize what we actually spent our money on. Here I was 17, engaged to me married, paying for school, a dorm and an apartment while also paying bills and 2 car payments. Don't even mention the amount of gas spent getting back and forth to school and the food kept in our fridge. I worked a full time job at Jake's dad's restaurant around my school schedule and he worked full time.

I have to say that I hear of people really working themselves into a hole of debt. For some reason, that just baffles me. Then again I can see how your particular lifestyle choices can have a huge effect on your spending habits. I know that I'm only 22, so some of you may scoff at the idea that I can offer any real advice on money but last year we made less than 18,000 and lived extremely comfortable all year long. I hear of people making MUCH, MUCH more than that and still stressing about money and cutting it close every month. So here it is, the (maybe unwanted) advice of a (possibly naive) 22 year old mommy.

Saving Money
I think this is one I might relate a little bit more to lifestyle choice. You see, we eat pretty healthy around here. I don't keep junk food or sweets in my house and the foods I buy are wholesome, organic foods for meals with the occasional healthy snacks. I think it's funny to hear people talk about how expensive it is to eat healthy and organic. So you're telling me it wasn't expensive to stock up on soda because there was a sale, toss an extra package of Oreos or Doritos into the cart and hit a fast food place on the way home? Please tell me you're kidding. Guess what, I spend not even $50 a week on organic groceries how much did that last shopping trip with all those junk foods cost? How about the $20 you just laid our for greasy burgers and fries for your family? Don't get me wrong, we do eat out occasionally and I like Oreos, but I think we save so much money by simply not buying items that are purely junk snacks. Those foods are convenience foods and you are paying for the convenience of not having to make them yourselves but then sacrifice quality and health. I also use coupons if they happen to be in the weekly ad I pick up during my shopping trip, but I'm definitely not an extreme couponer by ANY means. So just think of how much money I could REALLY save then. =)

Something else we've chosen to do to save money is cloth diapering. I get that some people just "don't think they could do it" but you what, I was one of them! I thought it was "icky" or too much effort or trying to convince myself that the extra laundry wasn't saving money. It's one of those things for me that I just can't ever seem to make any cons outweigh the enormous pros though. When it comes right down to it you are buying one stash of diapers that ultimately last you until potty training and still have life in them for later children. (Okay, in reality you cloth diapering mamas know we just can't resist new cute prints and constantly updating and rotating our stashes, but let's talk from a basic standpoint.) I could really go on and on about the ways to save money with cloth diapers but this isn't a cloth diaper post so if you'd like to read more, here's a great post over at Tiny Tush. (Keep in mind they even did this research using the cost of the least expensive non-name brand bulk sizes and face it, most of you are actually paying more than that anyway.)

See above reasons for also using items such as cloth menstrual pads, cloth wipes, cloth "unpaper" towels, stainless steel water bottles, and reusable shopping bags. (You can save a few cents at most stores for using your own bag!)

I also make most things needed for our house on my own. I love to sew and craft so it only makes sense to save money by making and up cycling things yourself. Bonus that you then also get to create a custom look and style for you house. =)

How we value our money
For me this is a big one. The first things our money goes to is our high rent and bills associated with the townhouse as well as all other bills including vehicles, insurances, phones, internet. Then there's gas and groceries. Guess what's not on our list of things to run out and buy? You can bet it's not the newest and greatest techy gear out there. Yeah, we don't have fancy things like an iPad and my phone's just mediocre but heck it's mostly Talia's toy anyways, hah.

I also refrain from buying things just because they are a "good deal". You wouldn't believe some of the crazy purchases people have made because it was a great deal only to be stuck with boxes and boxes and piles of junk stored in their homes. Then they forget what they've even purchased because there's so much and they end up buying replacements because they already have too much stuff to go through.

Also, we have put so much effort into not acquiring loans for everything we wanted. The truck we owned was completely paid off before we even though of getting a second car and although we did get a loan for it, it's a very low value loan that just build credit and will be paid in lump sum next month. We also made sure that we got a car that was good on gas mileage and would be reliable. It was also important that it have low miles so that we could get a lot of use out of it. You know what, we found a car in great condition for $3,000  with only 50,000 miles but was a 1999 model and swooped it up rather than having to have something nice and new and paying on it forever. We take really good care of them too so that we don't feel like we "have" to get a new car when ours are perfectly fine and actually in better shape than most people's.

I think one of the points here is to just learn to be content with what you have and not be worried about "Keepin' Up with the Jones's" or outdoing them just for some sort of personal validation. Like I said, what we have is nice, but we don't have to have a lot.

How to get more of it
First and foremost, you have to work for it. If you don't have the opportunity to really earn your money and then have to be frugal with it and make tough decisions about where it's going to go then in the end you will find yourself in that hole of debt. I'm content knowing that my hubby works so hard to provide for our family and now he is able to pay someone else to do the labor aspect of his job and he can work harder to drum up more business and new clients. I also know that if for some reason our current work situation didn't work out (which is not something that will ever happen) he would be right back out there getting a job or two as would I.  After all, you can't expect that there will be a fairy godmother swoop in to pay all your bills and hand you money the rest of your life because that's just not reality my friends.

You can also capitalize off your hobbies. I really enjoy sewing and when I have free time I sew things to sell such as cloth diapers, wet bags, mama cloth, you name it. I also have  degree in Photography and although I keep it more as a hobby I always have the opportunity to make money with it with some basic marketing. I would be stressed out if I had to make photography a job that had to really provide for me up here though. I swear so many people buy a fancy camera and think they can sell themselves as professional photographer... seriously? But people think about aspect #1 of wanting to save money and will sacrifice quality again for someone with skills no better than point and shoot.

Another great option is to look into stores that have a sell back program. There's a local store here that accepts gently used children's cloths and items. I don't know about you but I've accumulated so much clothing for my little girl and I just don't have the space to be saving every little things for a future child that's not even guaranteed to be a girl.

All in all, I'm 22 and I can confidently say that within 6 months we will have no debt, no payments on vehicles, and will have set up a lifestyle for ourselves to continue living without unnecessary payments on things. We will have a greenhouse and grow most of our own foods and have alternative energy options for our home. I wouldn't trade that future for a present time of having small nice "stuff" yet not have the important large items such as vehicles and a home. I guess we would just rather actually own something of our own and be able to provide for our family in other ways so that we won't have anything to worry about if something terrible were to happen than to throw our money away on useless things that make us happy for the current 5 seconds before moving on to something we want more.
Call me naive, but it's working great for us! =)

Easy Peasy Wet Bag Tutorial

Wet bags are great for on the go cloth diapering, mama cloth, or even just swimsuits and gym clothes. As a cloth diapering mama, I've already got a few of these that I made myself and I can't wait to make more of various sizes. They are also great to keep in the kitchen for dish cloths & messy aprons or pot holders, etc. Here's an easy way to make your own. You can easily adjust things to you own preference as far as size, just make sure that you choose a zipper that is long enough.
