Breathe In, Breathe Out & Let It All Go #PamperedPreggie

Exercise is important at every stage of life, especially during pregnancy. This is a time when you are preparing your body to create and birth a child and change to accommodate this new little life. During pregnancy, your uterus grows to 10 times it's pre-pregnant size and when combined with the weight of your growing baby and other internal organs, that is a lot of added pressure to put on your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Yoga can be an amazing, lower impact way to not only strengthen your body but really prepare it and yourself for the marathon of birth. The breathing techniques are especially helpful and will come in handy when the actual act of labor begins.

As with any other style of exercise, it is important that you do not overwork yourself. If you don't usually do much exercise it's important that you slowly work yourself into it. I found Jennifer Wolfe's Prenantal Vinyasa Yoga DVD to conveniently help me do just that. It offers an introductory section on the basic poses and how you can be sure to safely adapt them to your growing body by level of comfort and trimester. The DVD set also features various routine lengths such as 15, 30, 45 & even 75 minute routines. There is even an added partner routine. I like the idea of a partner routine because I think it's a very low impact way to calm your self and bond not only with the growing baby inside you, but also with your partner.

Yoga focuses on stretching and strengthening, breathing, and mental relaxation, making it the perfect tool to prepare for labor and birth. It also focuses on posture which can help many pregnant women alleviate back and neck pain associated with a changing body and weight gain. This routine is specifically designed to not only provide the relaxing qualities of yoga, but also to provide a rigorous workout that will truly prepare those muscles for the task at hand. Often, expecting mothers that practice yoga note that they have a shorter labor, less pain, and fewer medical interventions.

  1. This looks fantastic! I wish I had known more about yoga while I was pregnant with my 6 children. If... I have anymore I am definitely going this route!

  2. I haven't ever done yoga before when pregnant but think it would be a good idea to get all those muscles ready for the big workout!
