Ditch the Diaper Pail Smell

You know that disgusting, lingering smell that is sometimes found around your house? For us personally, it's usually the diaper pail or trash can. Specifically the trash can in our hall bathroom because that happens to be where the diaper sprayer is installed so our poopy diapers usually make a stop there to be sprayed off before being tossed into the diaper pail and wipes get tossed into that garbage can. As much as I try to rinse our our various containers on a regular basis to keep smells from building up, it happens.

Here's a super easy DIY that will take you all of 5 minutes to do, is easy to customize with whatever quantity you want, and will get rid of those pesky odors in no time.

DIY Odor Absorbing Disks

1/2 cup baking soda
Spring water
Essential oil of choice -- I used sweet orange =)

(This will make 7 mini cupcake disks.)

I chose to use a mini cupcake tin and wrappers because that's what I had on hand and our garbage cans and diaper pail are both pretty small in comparison to a lot of other on the market.

Measure out baking soda into small bowl. Add small amount of water and about 10 drops essential oil. Mix until it forms a nice paste. Portion into mini cupcake wrappers and let dry for 24 hours.

Pop out of the wrappers and toss one into the bottom of any pail that is starting to smell. Extras can be stored in an airtight plastic bag in the freezer. Each disk lasts us approximately 3 weeks or so.

Easy peasy and frugal, two of my favorite things. =)

What simple household tips do you have?

  2. I'm going to try this! What do you use as a diaper pail? I've just been using a small trash can under the sink in the bathroom but it smells horrible and even tho we keep the cabinet closed we can still smell it in the bathroom and hallway. My son's urine is very strong smelling :( i've been washing every day to day and a half. Oh and the diapers don't stink after I wash them. Any suggestions?

  7. What a fantastic idea !!! This might work in the bathroom where I keep a diaper genie version of bags for the kitty box , too. Thanks so much for sharing. I even use essential oil drops in the vaporizer instead of vicks ( lavender or tea tree oil)

    1. It's totally safe for cloth diapers, just be sure not to overdo the essential oils. ;)
